DSC Applications

Dyesol Designs In BIPV

A wide range of applications for dye solar cell (DSC) in society exist, both in the present and in the future, with markets that only DSC can address - low light, dappled light, and indoor light markets. As the technology improves, DSC will compete with silicon photovoltaics in traditional applications such as building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).

In contrast to traditional photovoltaics, DSC uses simpler production processes which utilise less energy and will have a reduced environmental impact and lower costs. In addition, DSC panels are more versatile as they are less sensitive to the angle of the solar radiation, which allows them to be installed on vertical walls (for example glass office buildings) and in places with poor light. They can be transparent and utilise different colours resulting in better architectural integration options than those available for silicon.

Solar Energy Marketplace And BIPV

  • Photovoltaics is one of the fastest growing market segments in the world today
  • Over 50% of all energy used is in buildings
  • Solar power is the most effective energy generator for the built environment for BIPV
  • BIPV reduces the carbon footprint for buildings, providing electricity with minimal distribution losses
  • BIPV offers secure power for buildings, and provides high profile renewable energy at a low added cost
  • First and second generation solar are only useful for roofs due to their high dependence on direct and directed light, however third generation solar can be used to replace walls as a building product

DSC In Current Projects

Dyesol works in partnerships and joint venture projects with companies around the world to continue to develop the latest in DSC technology applications.
Some of these companies and projects include:
  • Major Italian Corporations ERG Renew (ERG Group) and Permasteelisa (the world’s leading façade company), are currently involved in the development of BIPV using Dyesol materials and technologies.
  • In the United Kingdom, the fifth largest steel producer in the world, Corus is in partnership with Dyesol developing metal based panels which; based on cost, efficiency and durability, are forecast to set a new industry benchmark being more competitive than any other solar technology.
  • In Korea, Dyesol has teamed with Timo Technologies (called Dyesol-Timo) and associated with Acrosol to commercialise DSC and bring BIPV products to the Korean market place.
In Australia, Dyesol operates a pilot plant to produce new BIPV designs for test and evaluation.

Tandem Products

DSC technology from Dyesol opens the door for the future development of many tandem products.  These range from enhanced power output devices to direct chemical production and complete building solutions. Dyesol’s tandem technology achieves over 12% efficiency in industrial sized cells in one-third sun, and almost 10% in full sun.

The possibilities for applications of DSC are almost unlimited.
